Town of Warwick Selectboard November 17, 2007 Minutes Members Present: Jim Toth, vice-chair; Rick Abbott Others Present: Miryam Williamson, reporter; Women's Guild members Janet Alden, Maria Whitney, Carol Foote, and Nancy Kilhart; David Young, coordinator; Larry Carey, historical society Selectboard chair Patricia Lemon audited the meeting by telephone and did not vote. The meeting was called to order at 10:07 am by Vice-Chairman Toth. David Young gave an update on the two issues townsfolk have raised regarding the location of the "Welcome to Warwick" sign to be erected on the Town Park by the Women’s Guild, one related to visibility of the sign by northbound traffic on Route 78 - especially visibility of the hanging, event signs - the other safety - the possible obstruction of lines of sight from vehicles entering or crossing Route 78 from of oncoming northbound traffic by the sign at the Route 78 / Hotel Road intersection across from the Library. After some discussion, the group reached an informal consensus that there were no other issues of concern, and the meeting moved outside to the Town Park. A rough scale model of the sign was positioned at the location marked for Dig Safe, and those in attendance considered it from various vantage points. Jim Toth drove his vehicle from Hotel Road onto southbound Route 78 and then returned by the same way. He reported that the sign would not block visibility of entering traffic and that by the time a car was close enough to read the event signage it could be read through the fence. Toth stated that the lower branches of the spruce tree will interfere with visibility of the sign, noting that George Day had previously advocated for the removal of the tree. Those present agreed that removal of the tree would be desirable. Toth further indicated that we would not be doing anything with the tree immediately, but that immediate efforts would be focussed on getting the sign installed, leaving the issue of the tree and whether it should be trimmed or cut down for some time in the not-too-distant future. The consensus was that the seventy-two-inch post height was sufficient. The meeting moved back indoors. Rick Abbot moved that the Board of Selectmen approve the location of the sign where marked. The motion was approved by a vote of 2 in favor and none opposed. Patricia Lemon did not vote, but noted her concurrence with the Selectboard decision. Rick Abbot moved to adjourn. The motion was seconded by Jim Toth. The motion carried and the meeting adjourned at 10:35 am. Submitted by Town Coordinator Select David Young. Approved December 3, 2007.
